MAN MADE, our three-year course in design, views the discipline of design as an instrument for creating new products and communication strategies that can play a decisive role in a process of change, affecting production, economics, and society.
First level academic diploma. Taught in English.
Accredited by the Ministry of Instruction, Universities, and Research.
Course leader: Studio Formafantasma
"Ever since they started their activity nine years ago, the Italian designers Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, from the Formafantasma Studio in Amsterdam, have developed a unique aesthetic, questioning the role of design and how this can change the world. [...] For this reason, their portfolio, more than a review of practical objects, can be considered a study of what one day could be.”
Alice Cavanagh, The Wall Street Journal Magazine
The course aims to respond to the urgent needs of contemporary global ecology through the study and application of new systems of production and information technology, while drawing on local and artisanal systems of production. This means working with materials and graphics, designing new products and new communications systems, coming to terms with new technologies, but also rethinking the role of local, artisanal, and industrial production in the contemporary world. Above all, it means questioning the ways we produce, market, and consume objects.
As young designers, students will be called upon to refine their understanding of themselves and their interests and to contextualize that understanding in the present, focusing on understanding the profound repercussions that their work will have in the world. New graduates, at the conclusion of an itinerary aimed at promoting the development of European-dimension professional skills, will be able to apply their skills as professionals in firms and companies working in the fields of product and service design, and visual and multimedia communications, as well as in private and public cultural and educational institutions. The training offered in the course will constitute a solid basis for studies in second level degree programs, both in Italy and abroad.

Are you interested in?
First year: I am
The first year is devoted to who you are as a young designer. You will have to find yourself in materials, colors, shapes, and images. The educational approach will be a mixture of theory and practice in which even the most theory-intensive courses will be translated into practical exercises aimed at understanding both the strengths and limitations of the basic instruments of design, as well as developing your own visual vocabulary.
Starting in the first year, extracurricular activities will include museum visits, workshops, outside internships, and study trips, first in Italy and then abroad.
Second year: you are
The second year will be a confrontation with the other. You will be asked to apply what you learned in the first year to objects or instruments of communication in the service of another person. Specifically, you will be guided to develop greater awareness of form and composition, and the context in which your design will be put to work. Your teachers will not only push you to learn from them, but above all to interrogate yourself and to question the status quo in order to develop original and innovative ideas.
In the second year, a study trip will be organized to a European country where students will visit local museums as well as design firms and companies useful for their professional growth.
Third year: we are
The third year will be dedicated to your thesis project. You will decide whether to concentrate on product design or visual and video communication. This will be the year in which you reach maturity as a designer and you will be called upon to see your work as a designer as part of a larger, more complex system. If, for example, you have to design a chair in oak, your first step will be to learn the workings of the wood industry, how a forest grows, and essential elements of environmental protection.
This result can also be achieved by creating a documentary or an online platform that makes the relationship between economy, resource exploitation, and climate change more engaging and understandable for the user.

Starting in the first year, trips to Italy and abroad, excursions, visits to museums and artistic events, workshops and collaborations with institutions outside the Academy will be organized. Explorations that each student will face carrying a "backpack" to fill with new experiences, and from which to draw what they have learned during their studies, putting themselves to the test in new and challenging contexts.
