INTEGUMENT. FROM WASTE TO BIOMATERIAL

It is estimated that around 4 billion tons of waste are produced every year in the world: half comes from households, the other half from either  industrial or agricultural production activities. Since 2004, the family-owned business has invested in the production of Sicilian almonds, whose waste (husk, peel, integument) is equivalent to around 70% of the consumed product (seed). The aim of the project is the study of almond by-products, analyzing their physical and chemical properties and characteristics, to try to transform them into new materials to be used in the world of design.

BREAD GESTURES. SUPPLEMENT TO THE SICILIAN TRADITION

Telling a story is like making bread: you only need a few basic ingredients. All you need to make bread is flour, water and salt. To tell a story, you have to rely on  fragments scattered in memory: details, clues, witness accounts, objects and images that accompany each life story. To make bread, the ingredients are carefully chosen, mixing them into the dough and rediscovering the wisdom of ancient gestures to learn them anew. To make a story, memories are collected and then intertwined and arranged, one after the other, on a blank page. Bread is a precise, tangible creation, a symbol, a system of concrete signs that permit  the embody  practical wisdom, a food that nourishes us and gives us life. Its scent precedes the bread itself, but its infinite forms make bread become a presence, impose itself and demand respect.
