"Art Carpet" is a project born from the collaboration between Luxury Carpet, a company specializing in the creation of high-end bespoke carpets and rugs, the MADE Program at the Rosario Gagliardi Academy of Fine Arts in Syracuse, and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
The goal of the project was to create a carpet/tapestry designed by the students of the Academy of Fine Arts, under the guidance of "Design Anthropology" professor Andrea Anastasio, woven with ECONYL® yarn (a sustainable regenerated nylon made, among other things, from recycled discarded or unused fishing nets), which was to be donated to the Teatro San Carlo.
Unexpectedly, director Ferzan Ozpetek decided to incorporate the carpet created by Luxury Carpet based on the students' design from the MADE Program into the stage set of the opera, whose premiere took place on the evening of September 12, 2023. This was a source of great satisfaction for all of us: for the students, for Eric Silverio (the author of the selected design—we would have liked to choose more than one, but c’est la vie), for Andrea Anastasio, for Vincenzo Solenne, the driving force behind Luxury Carpet, and his fantastic collaborators, who infuse their craftsmanship into one of the many Italian excellences that the world envies us.
