TRADITION BECOMES DIGITAL

TEACHER:

WASP team

OBJECTIVES

Principles of Computational Design and Additive Manufacturing will explore “making” through the lens of design, with a specific focus on designing for additive manufacturing.

Participants will work with a selection of CAD software packages and computational design tools to create their own projects throughout the workshop.

They will gain insight into processes of digital and physical form finding, and acquire skills that will be applicable across scales and disciplines.

Participants should have a working knowledge of at least one of the most widely used 3D modelling applications.

TIMING AND CONTENT

5-DAY WORKSHOP: 15 hr practice + 15 hr observation

Day 1

Intro and workshop overview. Modeling and Parametric Design (Rhino, Grasshopper, Blender)

Day 2

Organic Modeling and Digital Sculpting (Sculptrix)

Design for Addittive Manufacturing (AM): steps required to take a designed object from concept to physical reality

Day 3

Material Design: designing and fabricating with different materials

Preparing for 3D printing: how to create a machine-ready file appropriate for the additive manufacturing process (Simplify3D, Cura)

Going real: printing of 3D models designed by the students (maximum volume: diam. 400 x H. 700 mm)

Day 4

Going real: printing of 3D models designed by the students (maximum volume: diam. 400 x H. 700 mm)
