Maria Vittoria Trovato is a lecturer in the History of Photography at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Siracusa MADE Program.
After studying philosophy in Catania, she moved to Milan for a master's degree in photography at NABA and subsequently to New York for an internship at Magnum Photos. In 2007, she began working as a freelance photographer for various magazines. Since 2008, she has been engaged in a project with writer Marco Ciriello focusing on the sea, ships, and the people who work on them. Their cargo ship journey from Buenos Aires to Hamburg is documented in the book Grande Atlantico. Cargo Ship Stories (2010). In 2011, she relocated to Berlin and started collaborating with the Ostkreuz photography agency. Since 2019, she has returned to Syracuse to embark on the Zaratan venture (libreriazaratan.com), a newly conceived meeting point for book, photography, and music enthusiasts. Her photographs have been published in D di Repubblica, Io Donna, IL Magazine, Internazionale, TAZ, Geo, Monocle, Courrier International, and Der Spiegel.
